Barry Norman was one of the nation's most popular and enduring broadcasters. Journalist, writer and presenter, he was best known for having fronted the BBC's flagship Film programme for more than 25 years.

While working as a gossip columnist for The Daily Sketch, Barry met a pretty, talented young journalist called Diana Narracott, when they were sent to cover the same news story. Within a year they were married, their union lasting until Diana's untimely death in 2011.

Barry Norman was Britain's most respected and popular film critic. He became famous as the regular presenter of the BBCFilmprogramme, starting in 1972 withFilm 72; by the time he left afterFilm 98he had become a household name.

He also presented other documentaries and programmes, includingTonightandOmnibus. In the late 1970s and 1980s he wrote and presented four acclaimed series onThe Hollywood Greatsand one onThe British Greats, and the ten-part BBC series,Talking Pictures, each of which was backed up by best-selling books.

Barry started his writing career as a journalist on theKensington Newsand was Show Business Editor of theDaily Mailuntil 1971. He contributed over the years to theGuardianas occasional leader writer and Wednesday columnist, to theObserveras sports writer, toThe Timesas television critic and also as a scriptwriter for the cartoon strip Flook on theDaily Mail. Barry also wrote many novels and non-fiction books, including books on film and cricket.

He died in 2017.
